My name is Kim Foley and I am the Eighth grade homeroom teacher and the Language Arts teacher for grades 6-8 for the 2020-2021 school year. I have a BS in English from Winona State University in Winona, MN and an MA in Reading from Concordia University in River Forest, IL. This is my sixteenth school year with the Archdiocese of Chicago and my twentieth year overall. My husband, Bill, and I have two girls of our own: Amelia, a senior at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa and Tessa, a sophomore at the University of Indianapolis.
After what I know was no doubt an interesting summer break, I am excited to be moving homerooms from Sixth to Eighth for the upcoming school year. I know families have had to make many adjustments and that decisions for the school year are always changing. As we begin the school year, we will have a group of students who are joining us for in person learning everyday and another group of students who will join us via daily Zoom meetings and Google meets. It will be vital to everyone's success as we begin this new adventure that we remain flexible and open to new methods of communication. The entire COP junior high will be utilizing Google Classroom as the best platform for listing and submitting weekly classwork. Information will also be sent home to enable families to login to PowerSchool if you have not already done so as another way of keeping in the loop. I will also keep this Weebly page current with updates as they become available.
Additionally, every effort has been made to accommodate the CDC guidelines of 6 feet apart between students within the classroom and when traveling within the school halls. We have some changes planned for the junior high students, including a new Social Studies/Science teacher, Mr. Andrew Hubbard. After being unexpectedly home since mid-March, I look forward to getting started with the junior high students as they continue to improve both their writing and reading skills as we navigate our new normal.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Housekeeping:
*Red folders will be sent home every Wednesday with corrected papers from all three junior high teachers as well as any notes from the office. They are to be signed and returned to school no later than Friday.
*Book Condition Forms will be sent sent home with the students on Monday, August 17. There are six books--Regligion, Language Network, Literature, Science, Social Studies and Math--that the kids are responsible for keeping in good condition this school year. The students are advised to bring home two books per day and look through each book with an adult at home, listing anything that was wrong with each book. The forms are to be signed and returned by Friday, August 21. Please return them ASAP, as the consequence for not returning them is a loss of recess.
*Homework planners/Assignment notebooks are to be filled out by each student EVERYDAY and brought home. I list the homework on the white board in my room everyday and the students are given a few minutes before dismissal to check that they have written it all down and get the appropriate materials. In addition, classroom websites--Google Classroom, primarily--are updated regularly. However, it is the students' responsibility to list their classroom work, including due dates, and pack their backpacks accordingly. Websites are intended as a back-up, not as the primary way the students are keeping track of their assignments.
*Missing homework/Homework detentions will once again be utilized by the junior high teachers this school year. When a missing homework slip is sent home, it is to be filled out by the student. The homework is to be completed and verified by an adult, who then signs the missing homework slip. The completed assignment and signed homework slip should be returned on the next school day. If three homework slips are accumulated, an afterschool homework detention will be issued. A teacher will notify the family of the date and time the homework detention is to be served. If the amount of missing homework does not improve, a meeting including the student, family, teacher(s) and administration may be necessary--TBD.
*Silent reading books should be with EVERY student EVERY day. As listed in their morning procedures, the students are given time every morning to read from a book of their choice. At various other times during the day, the students may have a few minutes to read their books and work toward the goal of AT LEAST 30 minutes of reading per day. I am more than happy to lend a student a book; however, they are expected to be sitting and reading from 8:05-8:15am every morning. That is not the time to look for a book.
