Weekly Journal paragraph: grades 6-8
Each week, as a way of reviewing and practicing Language Arts concepts including grammar, writing, vocabulary, etc., each student will receive a journal prompt. The students will receive the prompt on the first day of the school week (usually Monday) and it will be turned in on the last day of the school week (usually Friday). Each paragraph will be graded for format, topic sentence that includes the prompt, supporting sentences that support the topic sentence, grammar, spelling, sentence mechanics, etc. Each paragraph is required to be AT LEAST 5 sentences in length and be indented, Approximately 8-10 minutes will be given at the beginning of Monday's class to work on the journal prompt. The students will be responsible for keeping the completed journal paragraphs in their folders until the end of the week.
Weekly Spelling: grades 6-8
Each week, grades 6-8 will receive a spelling list on the first day of the school week (usually Monday) and turned in on Thursday of the same week. In addition, spelling lists will be tested on Fridays. Each list will work on a specific spelling skill and should assist in the students' word choice when both writing and speaking. Beginning Second Trimester, weekly spelling tests have had an application component. The students will need to show me that they understand more about the spelling words than just how to spell them. They will be asked to define them-- including parts of speech-- use them correctly in sentences, find rhyming words, use the letters in the spelling words to create new words, etc. At the end of each spelling test, the students will be required to correctly complete a task for FIVE of their weekly spelling words. In addition, the students have the option of completing the task for five MORE of their words each week that will be added to their spelling test as extra credit.
Weekly Grammar Boxes: grades 6-8
In addition to learning grammar rules in isolation, we continually practice the application of grammar principles and rules including capitalization, punctuation, usage, language mechanics, and spelling. Several Grammar Boxes will be assigned per week. Errors will be counted and fixed by the students and three of the mistakes need to be explained to prove their understanding.
